1977 und 1978 wurden 28 Bilder Dieter Zirkels in Häusern des Goethe Instituts in den USA und Kanada ausgestellt:

- San Francisco (Kalifornien)
- Toronto (Ontario, Kanada)
Die Ausstellung wurde umgesetzt von der Galerie Utermann aus Dortmund. Laut Passstempel reiste Zirkel am 7. September 1977 über New York in die USA ein. Seinen handschriftlichen Notizen zufolge reiste er am selben Tag noch nach Atlanta, um am 9. September bei der Ausstellungseröffnung zugegen zu sein. Am 10. September reiste er nach New Orleans und am 12. September nach San Francisco. Am 17. September kehrte er nach New York zurück. Die Heimreise nach Deutschland trat er am 22. September an.
